October Reading List

Happy October! I have a hard time saying this is my favorite time of year, because lets face it I feel that way about pretty much every season, but I just love the bold entrance of the cooler weather! One of my favorite things to do in the fall is curl up under a blanket with a good read and a mug of something warm. I've been sick for the past week, so I've been able to get a head start on my October reading list and let me tell ya, it's a good one!

Each pick is completely different from the last spanning in genres from psychological thriller to historical fiction (shocking, I know) but they are all tied together with the commonality of dealing with loss though in completely different ways. AND for any cat lovers out there I have a special pick that you are sure to love! Check out my October reading picks below!

Colbie is starting fresh in a new career after a rough couple of years in which she lost her best friend and her husband. She has opened up a new restaurant with her father and brother and is feeling like she is on route to getting back some sort of normalcy. Things get a bit complicated when her brother hires a new head chef who just so happens to tie her back up in the emotional turmoil of the whole situation she was attempting to escape. The new chef, Alec, was the brother of her best friend who she grew up next door to and shares a lot of painful history with. Can they make things work? Or is everything bound to fall apart? Along with Colbie we learn the importance of opening up and coping with loss by facing it head on in this touching story about second chances and healing by Jamie Beck.

Twist after twist after twist, J.T Ellison sends us on a doozy of a ride in this story of a wife that suddenly leaves her husband after a year of deceit and loss. Sutton leaves a note for her husband stating that she has left and wishes for him to not look for her. Ethan at first believes the note and is crushed by the departure of his wife, but quickly finds himself questioning the situation. Sutton left behind all of her belongings. Her phone, her clothes, her laptop that as a writer is her closest companion, everything is still in its place. No money has been withdrawn from their bank account. No activity on the credit cards. Ethen feels something is very wrong.

As the story unfolds we find that not everything is as it seems. The sudden death of their baby the year before might not have been an accident. The issues Sutton faced from an online blogger might be a bigger issue. The affair that Ethan had prove he isn't the perfect husband. The cracks in the relationship mixed with the tumultuous year they encountered leave Ethan in hot water and we are left questioning what is real. A true psychological thriller that takes us through the mind of a mentally disturbed person who gets satisfaction from the tangled weave of their lies, Lie to Me is a solid and gripping story that is anything but predictable

This charming book by Sandi Ward is written through the eyes of a family cat that is left confused when one day his owner doesn't return home. The story begins to unfold and the cat must learn to make sense and come to terms with the situation. It becomes a time of change for the entire family as they learn to function as a team through mental illness, physical impairments, and the emotional turmoil that comes with so much change.

I think any pet owner wonders at one time or another what is really going on in their pet's head. Do they understand when we go on a trip? Do they wonder where we are? Do they know when we are sad? There are so many questions and this story is a wonderful take on what one cat thinks when put into a situation that doesn't follow their normal routine. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and as a fellow cat owner felt like the story could have been written by my own cat. Sandi nailed the routines and tendencies of a cat from comforting in an escalated situation to hesitating and hiding when confused.

This book is perfect for lovers of historical fiction and fantasy. This tells the story of Guilia, a young orphan, who ends up at the mercy of a great magician of Italy. In a time and country where magic was seen as something of the devil, she's put in a position where she must decide if she can trust the magician and his claims that his magic is actually a gift from god and is for protection. How will the fateful night where she attempted to pickpocket an elderly man change her life forever? And what will the secrets she's lived with all of her life reveal? The Orphan of Florence is a page turner and while I'm normally not the biggest fan of fantasy type topics like magic, this one wasn't too far fetched to lose my interest.
